Malawi, Africa Service-Learning
In the Fall of 2013, three Doctor of Physical Therapy students participated in a service-learning elective course that culminated in a two-three week project at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in the village of Namitondo in Malawi, Africa. The students spent the semester learning about health conditions in Malawi, the influences of traditional medicine, the Chichewa culture and the role of community health worker volunteers in health care. They prepared a three day training program for community health worker volunteers about physical therapy in palliative care. During the on-site visit to Namitondo in December 2013, the students delivered the training and assisted in the provision of physical therapy services in the 400 bed hospital.
